(More customer reviews)Having owned a 5 zone induction cooktop imported from the UK in my previous home, I was already spoiled and no stranger to the responsiveness, efficiency, and pure power of induction cooking as well as the different brand units out there. I was a tad nervous about plunking down $500 for a single induction burner, however, this little workhorse has proven to be one of the most joyously hard working appliances in this old kitchen being used exclusively now while the archaic smooth top stove sits cool and idle.
The heat settings on this unit are spontaneous and responsive with a range that will shame your pro-gas stove or cooktop for putting a perfect sear on a roast and boiling a large pot of water lightening fast, plus all settings in between that are dead on accurate as well as a setting low enough to be used as a hot plate. And all this can be done anywhere, even outdoors. What a concept!
I highly recommend this Viking cooker if you are considering bringing induction into your home and would like a test drive a unit that is truly top notch and representative of the genre.
***Important to remember with all induction cooktops is your cookware must be ferrous or magnetic. You can test your pots and pan bottoms with an ordinary kitchen magnet. Cast iron and enameled steel work wonderfully on induction and now there are many cookware manufacturers producing lines of stainless steel that are induction capable.

Fisher Paykel : CE901 36 Smoothtop Electric Cooktop with Hot Surface Indicator Review

(More customer reviews)I bought a CE901 cooktop in 2004 because I liked the way it looked. Nice design. After about a year, the regulator (knob) for the top right element sometimes failed to turn off. The amber light that warns about a hot element just stayed on forever. And I swear I got an electric shock once when touching the knob, but that was a one time thing. I called F&P because the unit was still under warranty. They sent a repair service who exchanged the regulator. In fact, I think they exchanged all regulators, not sure why.
A few weeks later we heard a loud noise when we turned on one of the elements, there was smoke and the smell of electric fire. F&P said it's not their problem anymore because the warranty ran out. After much complaining on my part, they said they'd send out the repair service again to change the electronics. I did not want the same (apparently incompetent) repair service to touch the cooktop. After more complaining and basically telling them their product nearly burnt my house down, they agreed to send a new cooktop.
Fast forward to 2010. A couple of weeks ago the same regulator that broke the first time around is again acting up. This time it no longer turns on the burner and feels "mushy" when you turn it. I plan to do the repair myself, but can't find any parts info in the manual or on the F&P website. The only place that has parts info for the CE901 is Sears(!).
As nice as the F&P appliances look, they seem to be of mediocre quality.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this hybrid so that I would be able to continue to use my regular cooking utensils and new utensils for the induction coils. I was very impressed with both sections of the cook top. After having gained experience with the induction section I would recommend that people have no fear of going to induction cooking only. I was very satisfied with the induction cooking and highly encourage anyone to replace their electric or gas cook tops with an induction unit.
On the down side, it is a little hard to keep clean. Using their cleaner in small sections at a time works best. When streaks' that remain are hard to remove, I found a damp sponge followed by a clean dry towel makes it easy to polish.

(More customer reviews)Sleek design, decent heat conduction -- but every time I use the cooktop more pits and scratches appear, even with very careful use and appropriate cookware. I've only had it a couple of weeks. I can't imagine how bad it will look in a couple of years. I almost wish I would have just gotten a new electric coil unit. At least then I could focus on cooking and not whether or not I am scratching the surface of the cooktop. If you have to have electric, this is a good one -- but be prepared to use a special cleaner and scrub pad, and accept that scratches are going to occur no matter what you do. If you can do gas... that would be my recommendation.

My 16 year old GE radiant still worked but the amount of time it took to heat up and, most importantly, the amount of time it took to cool down was frustrating. The heating time could be blamed on older burners but it is typical for radiant cooktops to take quite a while to cool down. When I had something that needed to be heated to boiling and then reduced to a simmer I had taken to turning on two burners -- one on medium or high and the other on low and moving the pan between them.
I would have thought about a gas stove but my kitchen is not plumbed for gas. When I saw the induction concept I was somewhat sceptical at first and bought a single burner induction cooktop to try the concept. I quickly became a convert. The induction cooktop will bring water to a boil in less than half the time of my old radiant cooktop and, more importantly, the temperature can be reduced immediately. And when I say "immediately" I mean immediately. One can go from a rolling boil to no boiling within seconds (see video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgKJLF0AyKI).
I had to have my electrical supply to the cooktop upgraded from 30 to 40 amps for the cost of about $800 and I can truly say that this cost and that of the cooktop has been well worth it.
Since most of my cookware was not induction capable I did need to buy some more but that was a relatively minor cost. Besides, after 30 years of marriage my wife now has new things to give me for presents ;-)
GE has a great product here. The large burner on the right will go to 3200 watts and will bring 4 - 6 quarts of water to a boil in 10 - 15 minutes. The cooktop looks great and functions even better. GE customer support was fantastic. The induction cooktop is supposed to fit right into a cutout for the Profile line but, prior to ordering, I emailed them to get the exact dimensions of the cutout necessary for my old cooktop. It took a few days but they did research it and emailed me the information.
Both GE and Thermador have very useful information and videos on their web sites for anyone interested.

(More customer reviews)The induction cooker arrived with the heavy induction magnet separated from the plastic mounting. To confirm why it was rattling severely on arrival, I did remove the bottom cover to examine. I was not impressed with the construction inside--mostly plastic. I would say that any moderate handling during shipment will break the mountings of the magnet so beware. The ad says commercial, but this is really a basic consumer product in my opinion. I ended up buying a commercial grade induction cooker at a local restaurant supply store. It works great, but, of course, it cost a lot more ($475)! If your cooker arrives in one piece, it will probably be fine for personal use. By the way, Amazon took back the cooker, paid the shipping, and refunded in a timely manner -- so no complaint there.

(More customer reviews)Having had this product for over two years I can say that I am sorry to have chosen it. Performance as far as cooking is fine but the burners have a tendency to chip away. I am on my third set. I am not a power chef, cooking for just myself and my husband and an occasional dinner for friends.
Cleaning the stainless steel has been a frustrating experience. It never seems to look clean in spite of the suggested methods from the manufacturer.
I expected more for the money and am disappointed. Choose wisely if day to day appearance of the product matters to you.

(More customer reviews)Really like this cooktop so far. Turn the knob to any setting and the electric clicker lights the burner. If for some reason the burner blows out, like if it's on a low simmer, the clicker kicks in and relights the stove. Good heat output.
Nice quality, easy to clean and one big advantage is that the grates are all on the same level so you can slide pots across or leave a pot in the middle.

High efficiency 2 burner gas cooktop(Natural Gas), GCT2-53CN Review

(More customer reviews)We purchased this stove for a kitchenette we were putting in our home office. It's a very nice little stove with electric ignition. It functions well, it was easy to install and burns very cleanly. We've had it for 3 months and used it lightly, and everything is great.
Stylistically, it's nice to look at as well. Overall I would recommend this product for someone who needs a light use two burner gas stove.
Here are the (minor) things that keep me from giving it a 5 star rating:
1) The on/off gas knobs are a little too close to the main burner. It would have been better if the main (larger) burner was in the rear. The actual layout won't burn the hair on your fingers or anything, but it just feels a little tight/warm compared to a full-size stove.
2) The electric ignition is "manual" - you turn on the gas and hold down the knob in order to light the gas. When the gas is lit, you release the knob. I would have preferred for the more normal system where you turn the knob all the way to maximum and the electric ignition goes on and then you back the knob off to turn the electric ignition off.
3) The electric ignition must stay on for a few seconds otherwise the gas flame goes right out. This period is noticeably longer than other electric ignition gas stoves I've used.
These three complaints are very minor, and maybe other people wouldn't even notice (or perhaps prefer the way at least #2 and #3 behave now versus the alternatives).

(More customer reviews)This delivered what I expected: all the benefits of induction cooking at a reasonable price with backward compatibility.
This induction cooktop is very powerful. In my tests, two cups of water were boiled in 90 seconds. This beats any non-induction cooktop I have ever seen including the fancy gas ones. Also, it can produce more bubbles than any other cooktop.
But it's not just powerful, the heat was very even as seen in the boiling pattern of a frying pan.
Some might prefer to pay more to have all burners be induction. I think the two induction burners are enough for high heat and the 3 electric burners will be useful for keeping other pots warm as well as any non-induction compatible cookware I have.
I use IKEA's 365 series cookware with this cooktop and it works very well.

(More customer reviews)I bought this cooktop to replace an existing Amana. My main reason for getting Viking was the automatic re-ignition feature, as my elderly mother in law often leaves the gas flowing and does not realize it. The reignition does not work well at low flow rates, though it does work at high or simmer. The biggest design goof up is that the knobs are stainless steel (Viking actually touts this as a superior feature!) But the sad fact is that the knobs get so hot from the adjacent burners that its actually impossible to touch it after using the cooktop for 15 -20 min.
In all poor design for an expensive product. Other companies like Bosch, and Dacor also make automatic re-ignition cooktops and worth looking at.

Pieces are falling off and the sparkers no longer work (I must have been zapped 20 times when they were going out). I'm at 4,500 feet elevation, not near the coast, so this corrosion problem would happen anywhere. I don't know what cheap metal they are using, but maybe someone at Smeg has heard of stainless steel?
Onto support. My "EuroHome" importer/dealer in Costa Rica was trying to buy some parts to fix this, but after 6 months of trying, suddenly declared that they no longer supports Smeg. I called 3 distributors in the US, listed on Smeg-USAs website. 2 had never heard of Smeg (Huh?) and the third refused to try to find parts for Smeg. So, not wanting to toss this expensive gas cooktop in the garbage, I called the GM of Smeg-USA. She absolutely refused to provide any assistance or value, but I was able to extract an email address of someone in Italy who supposedly could help. No response from Italy despite repeated emails nicely asking for assistance.
The Smeg is going in the garbage and I'll never even consider anything from them ever again.

(More customer reviews)The sensor touchpad/controls got harder and harder to use and were at best temperamental. I had to contact Electrolux for repair and they came out on three separate occasions with the repair only lasting a month at best. This left me waiting in between repairs with no cooktop at all, over a period of 5 months. The recommended repair men had no real clue how to fix my cooktop and the second repair guy was constantly on the phone to to Electrolux support for help but in the end it could not be repaired.
Luckily I had taken out the extended warranty with Electroloux and received a full refund and I am hesitant to buy another of there products even though I did like it when it was working. Maybe I just had a bad one...

(More customer reviews)I got this single burner/hot plate to use for cooking at the office. It gets the job done and I would say that I am very satisfied with the purchase.
The burner gets nice and hot on the high setting.
It comes at a great price as well.
The first time I used it there was a little smoke coming from the plate but it went away after a few seconds. According to the manufacturer its normal for that to happen and it hasn't happened again.
