I bought these knives based on others experience with the global brand cutting knives. I was not disappointed. This is a great value and these really are great knives. I'm a female so these knives fit perfectly in my hand (not sure how it would be for males). They are lightweight and makes cutting quick and fun. These knives meet form and function. Beautiful and fuctional. I hope to have them for years to come. Highly recommend.

In celebration of its 25-year anniversary, Global presents this three-piece commemorative knife set, which comes in a 25th Anniversary logo box with a Global lapel pin. The collection of knives consists of a 7-inch Oriental chef's knife (G-4), a 4-5/7-inch Oriental Santoku (GS-54), and a 4-1/3-inch chef's knife (GS-58). Use the knives for everything from slicing and dicing to peeling tough skins off produce. The high-quality knives feature CROMOVA 18 stainless-steel construction--a blend of 18-percent chromium for stain resistance plus molybdenum and vanadium for excellent edge retention. The thin, razor-sharp blades cleanly slice through foods, preserving the integrity of food and maximizing flavor. The blades also come "face-ground" with a long taper rather than a short bevel so edges remain sharp longer than even the best high-carbon stainless-steel knives.
High tech from tip to handle, Global knives from Japan created a sensation when they burst onto the world's culinary stage as an alternative to traditional European-style cutlery. The majority of Global knives are ground to a straight point rather than the western style of beveling the edge. Global also did away with bolsters to reduce weight. Balance is achieved by injecting a precise amount of sand for a particular blade style into a hollow handle. To ensure continuous balance, the sand flows inside the handle as a blade is maneuvered. A finger notch between the blade and handle provides safety. Furthermore, the knives come with stainless-steel handles that are molded to fit the hand and dimpled to resist slipping. Smaller around than many European-style handles, they're easy for small-handed cooks to grasp and seamless for sanitation. Global recommends using a ceramic sharpener or a diamond steel instead of a metal sharpening steel for its knives, supplemented by a synthetic whetstone, a ceramic whetstone, or a Shinkansen sharpener. Global also makes a Sharpening Guide Rail so blades can be honed on a whetstone at the proper angle. Global knives should be hand washed to protect edges, and they carry a lifetime warranty against defects and breakage.

I have used Global knives professionally as a Chef/Restauranteur and at Home for many years. I still have the first Global I ever bought the 11" Forged Chefs Knife it has done alot of serious cutting and still looks new. I have many more now but that was my first Global and what a knife it is.
The ergonomics and looks alone would sell these knives but couple that with their edge holding and incredible sharpness and they are truly the Ferrari of knives. They offer a perfect nonslip grip for any size hand and the balance and light weight make using them a a breeze. Also the metal storage block not only looks cool but will not dull your knives like a wood block does. BONUS.
Considering that you will be passing on these knives from generation to generation the cost should not be a serious concern. There are no handles or bolsters to break (or gather germs) they are one piece of perfectly balanced steel. If you take reasonably good care of these knives they will last you a lifetime of hard use and your kids lifetime too. My Globals have chopped, peeled and sliced for literally hundreds of thousands of people. I seriously doubt most of you will put them through that. But it is good to know that they will take it in stride.
I even take mine on vacation with me, not all of them just the basic kit I refuse to cook without them. We take long vacations and know we eat better at the rented home or villa than at most of the restaurants in what ever area we are in. One of the perks of being a Chef, don't worry we still give the finer eateries a spin it is a vacation after all. The locals have to eat too!
You will thank yourself everytime you use these knives, if you know a foodie you really care for get them at least a starter set as a gift. They will love you for it and you will get more great food out of them too.
Life is too short to use cheesy knives! You know the ones.

I wanted my knives to have the following characteristics: 1. sharp 2. Lightweight 3. Thin blade. 4. The feel it will last forever.
They are most definately sharp. Very light weight. Thinner blade compared to some German knives. I also got the feeling they would last forever due to the handle being metal too. Other knives you may have to worry about the rivets or deteriorating wood handles.
Handles: I bought these online based on reviews and the pictures here on Amazon. In the pictures I thought the black dots may have been some kind of rubber for grip. I wasn't too keen of the thought of potentially having little pieces of rubber glued to the knife. I ordered this set anyway and was pleasantly surprised that the dots are just colored dimples like a golf ball.
Utility knife grip: Looking at the picture of the utility knife I was worried about the grip because the handle looks a little different. I immediately washed this knife upon receiving it and used it to chop up some veggies. I found it very comfortable to use. No concerns with the grip at all.
My set was out of the box sharp and I was chopping things up effortlessly. There really is a "wow" factor if you've only experienced cheap knives from your local *mart stores.

I did a lot of research before purchasing my first knife set. I'm a recent college grad and want to start collecting some quality kitchen equipment to last me a lifetime (hopefully). My initial tip on these kinves was from the book "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain - a great read if you are interested in exploring cooking and the restaurant world or "culinary underbelly" as I believe he calls it. Bourdain recommends Global knives in the book.
These knives are the sharpest I have ever used. They are also very light and a delight to hold - great craftsmanship. My mother kept a set of heavy German knives that were dull as rocks (I don't think she ever sharpened them, well maybe once a decade) and it was always frightful to use them growing up as I felt I'd cut my finger clear off trying to get a raw potato sliced (I loved making the mashed potatoes).
The three piece set gives you a lot of versatility. I've even *gasp* used these as an impromptu cardboard box cutter. One cool thing about this set is it includes a Santoku as the main chef's knife. According to Wikipedia, the "'granton edge' release pattern (scalloped) on the blades that not only adds style, but helps to release thin slices and sticky food after slicing." Cool.
Looking into sharpening options - suggestions welcome.
Thank you Amazon for the very timely delivery (it currently looks like they are on backorder or something, though).

Be prepared for most any prep task in the kitchen with a uniquely designed 3-piece knife set that includes a 7-inch hollow ground santoku, a 5-1/4-inch utility knife, and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife. Global knives are distinct in design and therefore function. Forged in Japan from CROMOVA 18 stainless steel, Global knives have a smooth contour and seamless construction. The lightweight knives reduce hand fatigue associated with repeated chopping and mincing, and handles are dimpled to provide a non-slip grip. Global uses a hollow handle filled with sand to create balance. Their thin and razor sharp blades allow cooks to cleanly slice through foods, preserving the integrity of the ingredient and maximizing its flavor. Blended from 18 percent chromium for good stain resistance, plus molybdenum and vanadium for excellent edge retention, Global knives are designed for long-term use. They are face-ground with a long taper, so edges remain sharp longer. As with all fine cutlery, hand washing is best for care.
What's in the Box? A 7-inch hollow ground santoku, a 5-1/4-inch utility knife, and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife.
