Char-Griller 5050 Duo Gas-and-Charcoal Grill Review

Char-Griller 5050 Duo Gas-and-Charcoal Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used a Weber charcoal grill for years. I used it to grill and smoke. I loved the taste of charcoal, but finally got tired of the hassle. When I saw the duo, I thought my prayers had been answered. They were....but not really.
This is definitely the most versatile grill on the market (I added the smoker box) but they could have done so much more to make it a 'great' grill. When I saw the price tag, I was worried about the craftmanship. My worries were justified.
First, the materials that the grill is made out of are pretty good. The steel is heavy, the grills are solid, and the frame is rigid. The problem is the design and craftsmanship. A previous reviewer complained about the wheels being cheap plastic. Chargriller must have taken the advice, because the wheels that I have are fairly solid. It took about 2 hours to put the grill together by myself. While putting it together, I noticed the charcoal side and smoker are far from air-tight, not good for charcoal and smoking. You want a very tight charcoal grill so temperature can be controlled precisely by the dampers (the Weber I had was as tight as a drum). This grill is far from air-tight. The area around the lid has about a 1/4 inch gap and the smoker has many many areas where the pieces don't fit together perfectly. There are also a few holes in the smoker where screws for the feet would have gone (the smoker can also be a standalone grill). All these gaps and cracks make it nearly impossible to control the heat. With all the dampers closed, I should be able to smother the fire/coals/wood, but the grill burns at 400+ degrees even with all the dampers closed!!!
Other Cons:
- When the lids are open, the warming racks go up/back right over the lid. Anything that drips off the warming rack goes right down the lid and onto the ground behind the grill. I found this out the hard way after an afternoon of cooking burgers. What a mess!
- There are no bumpers around the grilling perimeter. One bad spatula or tong move and your meat will slide right off in any direction! They should have at least put a bumper in the back!
- The joints aren't tight. Any grease that drips down on the propane side in the corners between the bottom and side pieces of the grill goes right between the two pieces of metal and drips on the propane tank.
- No natural gas option
Pros:
- Propane, charcoal, smoker, side stove. Nuff said
- Cover that was ordered separately covers everything, including smoker box.
- Lots of grilling surface
- Grill plates are nice, solid, iron.
All in all, I would have paid $500 for this grill if it were of better quality. I'm not to upset, because I feel I got what I paid for, a substandard grill at a low price.

Sun-Mar 200 50-Gallon Rotating Compost Bin Review

Sun-Mar 200 50-Gallon Rotating Compost Bin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually have the Sun-Mar 400, but it works the exact same way as this one, so I felt the review may be helpful here as well!
****************
The first summer I had this composter (I got in in August) it produced not a lick of compost and I had followed the included instructions precisely. (And even called SunMar customer support, though they seemed to not understand what the problem was and recommended water and turning it more, which didn't solve the problem.)
The problem is that the English instructions are very misleading and do not describe how the composter actually works, or how best to care for it in order to maxamize compost production.
On a blog I learned a bit more about how the composter is supposed to work.
Misconceptions:
----------------------
From the promo material online and in the directions I thought that when items were deposited into the inner drum they should be compost (at least that's what the pictures and graphics seemed to depict). So when I would peek in the inner drum and see dried up leaves and other items that were very much NOT composted, I'd toss them back in the drum and the cycle repeated itself. For MONTHS. From August until it froze solid in January I had not produced a single tablespoon of finished compost, though it was obvious that things were breaking down in the outer drum.
The problem was that the items that ended up in the inner drum were not compost at all, but only partially rotted, but still identifiable, bits of things from the outer drum.
I was very disappointed, but it had been so long at that point there was no way to return the product. The Right Way to Use this Composter:
-----------------------------------------
Over the winter I did some digging and found that the German instructions are a lot different than the English ones, and figured out how this composter is actually designed to work.
1) Fill the outer drum with the right mix of green and brown matter and water. The instructions also say to add Peat Moss as a brown matter as this helps keep the finished compost light and fluffy. Water should be 60% or so of the weight of the compost in the outer drum. When you add new material, add it only at the mouth, do not try to spread it out towards the back of the drum, as this is where the port hole to the inner drum is, and you want only older, more composted materials to be sifting inwards.
2) Rotate the drum 3-5 rotations, 2 times a week or so. As you rotate the composter, some matter goes into the inner drum. This matter is often the most broken down of the items in the outer drum, but is NOT fully composted. At this point I would often scoop out the uncomposted dried-out matter and toss it back in the outer drum.
Rather than just watering the outer drum as the instructions say, you must add water to the inner drum as well to keep the materials inside moist as they continue their final breakdown, sequestered from the new matter being added to the outer drum. I have a little garden rake that I'll use to mix up the inner drum materials after I water them with the hose.
The outer drum and composting matter inside it actually doubles as insulation for the inner drum, keeping it warmer than the inner drum and speeding up the composting process.3) When adding water it is important to add it evenly. I add new material, water the top layer, close the lid and rotate it twice, open the lid, water it some more and rotate it twice more. The I open the inner drum port, mist water in there, and mix up the contents a little with a hand rake.
4) Leave the lid open. This is actually in the instructions, but I missed it the first time. Leaving the lid open is a bit counter-intuitive as this mode is marketed as pest-proof, so I thought by that I was obviously supposed to close the lid. Leaving the lid open on the top lets bugs come in and do their work.By adjusting how I was using the composter I went from no compost in three months to having rich dark compost in a month (granted there was broken down matter in the outer drum, it just had to finish its cycle in the inner drum).
The only thing bad about this product was that the instructions and promotional readings don't give a clear idea of how the composter works or how to use it properly.
Other than that it was easy to assemble, has held up great, and the handle makes it easy for me to turn, even though I am a very small woman.

Chapin Industrial 6-Gallon Stainless Steel Cart Sprayer 6300 Review

Chapin Industrial 6-Gallon Stainless Steel Cart Sprayer 6300
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have many of this manufacturers sprayers and have been using them for many years. Love them all. The problem with this one is that they've put quality (stainless steel) into the tank itself but all the other parts are steel which means rust. The base that holds the tank is also steel which is painted. Some of the paint is already chipped and the front leg which rests on the ground already has the paint chipped on the bottom. Some sort of protection should have been under that front leg. Living in Florida, I know how fast rust develops and the problems it causes. The tank cover is also painted. There's no way that some of the outside parts of any sprayer don't get wet at some point. I have paver walkways and they are not smooth. No matter how careful you are the front leg is going to drag on that rough surface at some point. This is the first sprayer I have ever used where some of the major parts are painted. I wish they had used aluminum or some other rustproof metal or even good quality plastic or fiberglass for all these parts. It certainly would have been worth paying a little more for the changes. On the plus side, it is very easy to manuever even when filled and it's a great design. I bought this sprayer as a backup for two other 12v battery operated ones that I use so it is not my main sprayer. If the batteries go, I can use this one in the interim. I did use it twice so far and it operated fine but I did have to pump it up quite often. If you don't use a sprayer frequently as I do, then it probably would be O'K.

Intermatic CL9 20-Watt Malibu Low Voltage Cast Metal Halogen Landscape Floodlight, Black Review

Intermatic CL9 20-Watt Malibu Low Voltage Cast Metal Halogen Landscape Floodlight, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought these lights along with several others for a Christmas present for my parents. To say the least they work great and are well built.
The lights are made out of solid aluminum construction with a glass lens. Unlike the cheap plastic models these can take quite a bit of abuse with few problems except a few scratches. The light bulb is easy to change and lasts for months. All you do is rotate the hood a quarter turn and change the bulb. Make sure to use a tissue or something of that sort to put in the new light bulb. The oils from your hand and the high heat from the halogen bulbs will make it burn out much faster.
The connections are simple but effective. To metal barbs are forced into the low voltage wiring when you push the two ends of the connectors together. The connection is solid and can be undone easily to remove a light, move it down a few feet, or replacing the light with a new one when the time arises.

Scotts Super Turf Builder WinterGuard Lawn Fertilizer - 50 lb. 21815 Review

Scotts Super Turf Builder WinterGuard Lawn Fertilizer - 50 lb. 21815
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are wanting to use this fertilizer for it's stated purpose, and you live somewhere like southern Louisiana, and you have St. Augustine grass; STOP!!!!!!!
As it turns out, this so-called winterizer has a very high Nitrogen number and a low potassium number. This is the exact opposite formula that you should use according to the LSU agriculture center.
"To winterize Southern, warm-season lawns, apply a fertilizer with more potash than nitrogren. Potash is represented by the third number on a fertilizer bag, while nitrogen is shown as the first.
In the fall, the emphasis in feeding changes from growth to strength. In September, apply a fertilizer with less nitrogen to slow growth and more potash to build stress tolerance.
"Our lawn grasses are the warm-season type, so they grow when it's warm and not much when it's cool. That means we must encourage growth with nitrogen in warm weather and not push the grasses when we shouldn't," said LSU AgCenter horticulturist Dr. Tom Koske."""If we keep feeding a relatively high N in the fall, we will spur soft, lush growth," Koske said, explaining that soft growth is more subject to diseases like brown patch. This damage won't have time to grow out of it because the cooler weather and shorter days won't let it.
"Our fall lawn care plan should encourage only moderate, slow growth on centipede and St. Augustine lawns," Koske said.
Beware of northern-blend winterize's that have high N and moderate potash. Apply any fall fertilization in September. It is not needed any longer in October.
If you already have been applying about half as much potash as N, winterizing is not necessary. If you have been putting out mostly N this summer, apply a southern winterizer now or just muriate of potash (0-0-60) at 1 to 2 pounds of muriate per 1,000 square feet.
"If in doubt, it is better to do nothing at all than do the wrong fertilizer program at this time," Koske said. "
[...]I gave a low rating because the product's label is misleading. It should specify that it should not be used in southern climates.

I don't know what happened to this stuff, it used to be great. For some reason it's all clumpy and doesn't want to sprinkle out. Most of it got wasted because I had to dump more out since it won't spread evenly. It should be a dust, but it's more like granules that won't stay on the plant leaves.

This is my second Malibu/Intermatic light set, and I have found both to be very difficult to keep lit. I'd love someone who considers this to be an easy-to-use set to tell me what I'm doing wrong. The device used to connect each light to the central cable requires squeezing two spiked halves together to pierce the cable, and hoping the spike on each half makes AND holds contact with the wire beneath the outer insulation. I'm pretty good with my hands but getting this connection setup to work - AND hold - has proven next to impossible. Once connected, if the light is moved or knocked over there's a good chance the connection will have to be redone. Often it is difficult to tell whether the light bulb is burned out or if you just haven't made connection exactly right. I started to invest the time this spring in getting the set going again (only its second season) and after half an hour without getting ANY of the four lights to work I realized this just isn't worth the trouble... even thought when it works the lights are really nice. I'd love to know if there are wired 4-light sets out there with a more reliable connection device.
PS - I contacted Intermatic/Malibu via email to ask what 4-light sets they make that do NOT have this type of connection device... after receiving a canned reply promising a response within 3 days, they failed to follow up within even 5 days and to date they have continued to ignore my inquiry. I guess they either don't have any or have more business than they can handle. Another 'customer service' failure...
PSS - After the above I called Intermatic/Malibu but my only option (even during business hours) was leaving a message, which no one returned. On another attempt I reached someone who surprisingly admitted to me she also had lots of trouble with the connection device. She suggested stripping away insulation on the main cable to help those spikes make contact with wire, or after stripping the cable removing the connection devices and hard-wiring the light unit. Although willing to give either a try, as I stripped away insulation I began thinking "what's wrong with this picture...?"
By the way, when I opened the light units to try changing bulbs, two of the four units were corroded in the bulb chamber... after being outside about a year.
Speaking of bulbs, I had forgotten to mention that when trying to replace bulbs last summer, nothing in the owners' manual that I could find tells you what kind of bulb it takes. Two had burned out LONG before any reasonable bulb life. I bought what appeared to be the right type (the commonly used MR-16, which has a built-in reflector). When I tried to remove the old bulb I found that what looks like an MR-16 bulb in the Malibu unit is actually a bolted-in reflector and a separate tiny Christmas-tree-sized bulb.

ST GABRIEL CHEMICAL BURNOUT WEED & GRASS KILLER RTU Review

ST GABRIEL CHEMICAL BURNOUT WEED and GRASS KILLER RTU

I bought this product last summer, hoping to kill off the poison ivy that grows all around my pond. It does NOT kill the plant, but it DOES "defoliate" as it claims. However, for every plant you defoliate, two or three new vigorous plants grow from the same spot, with a vengeance, after a week, or so. I suppose, if you keep up with defoliating every new plant, eventually the plant will die (?) but the price of the product makes that unreasonable. I will not buy the product again.

This is a affordable weed burner, not as nice as an infrared burner, but at less than half the cost, it is a great deal. It is not necessary to burn the weed, just heat it till the color of the leaves change, wait a few days and the weed will be dead. It works better if the ground is wet and the weed is turgid (full of water). Plus it is fun to watch them die and a lot healthier that spaying chemicals everywhere.

I bought this product (Red Dragon VT 3-30 SVC 500,000BTU) to melt snow, but it doesn't work for that. It claims to put out 500,000 BTUs, but a large grill is only about 75,000 and puts out at least this much. I expected to be able to melt significant snow, but have a typical propane tank empty in an hour. After an hour, I had gotten no where and the tank still felt full. I checked all the usual things such as that the valve on the tank and unit were fully opened, there was no obstruction in the hose, etc. It definately does not put out anywhere near 500,000 BTUs.
Don't buy this as a snow melter, but it would be great for toasting marshmellows.

We have a plague of oxalis in my City, and nothing seems to kill it. I tried this, and it did not kill it either. No surprise. If even Roundup won't kill the oxalis, I did not expect an organic, less powerful herbicide to work. It also only burned a few leaves of other kinds of weeds that were over about one inch tall and did not kill them.
However, it killed everything under about an inch tall that I sprayed it on. It worked quickly. By the time I got from one end of the yard to the other, the areas I first sprayed were showing wilting and discoloring leaves. So, it worked great on new, young, small weeds. Older weeds it did not kill. It does smell good when it is sprayed, and the smell lingers for a couple of hours. Next year when our rainy season starts, and the weeds start coming up, I'm going to spray it right away and not wait.

I just got my Weed Dragon yesterday, so I can't verify if the weeds will really die in a week like they say...but I will say that it was WAY easier to use than I thought it would be. The small propane tanks were less than $3 at Wal-Mart and Home Depot. It came pre-assembled so all I had to do was screw on the propane tank. The weeds wilted immediatley, JUST LIKE IN THE VIDEO ON THEIR WEBSITE. I couldn't believe it. It's almost too good to be true. I'm a 5' tall 30 year old woman and if I can use it, you can too. The size of the mini torch was just right for around my tomato and basil plants, and for around my lemon tree. It was really easy to hit the plants I wanted to...and avoid the good plants. I even used it along my fence line and it wilted the weeds without burning my fence. Love it. Love it. Love it.
