Waring MX1050XT Xtreme Hi-Power Blender Review

Waring MX1050XT Xtreme Hi-Power Blender

This blender is strong, powerful and FAST. The motor spins at 45,000 RPM and makes fast work of any blending job. The connection between the motor and blending jar is metal to metal (NO PLASTIC drive parts). The price is right, check out the warranty 3 years on motor and 2 years parts and labor, but it's built for commercial use and the way I use it - I expect it to last a long long time.
A huge advantage to me was the fact that it is only 18.5 inches tall (with the lid on, the 18" measurement is without the lid). This allows it to sit under my upper cupboards, neither the VitaMix or Blendtec would fit when assembled.
The motor has all the power you need, but is a bit noisy - I have to wait for a TV commercial or get dirty looks from my wife. Yet it is quieter than some other blenders because of the rubber cushion between the motor base and where the blending jar sits (which is removable and easy to clean).
The blending jar is big enough to really be useful. I like to make blender - ice cream - and can store a 7 days worth in the freezer from a single batch. While there is a hole in the top of the lid, I no longer use it as there is a certain splatter factor that comes with a blender that runs this strong and fast ;->
My blender ice cream, ½ cup of sugar free French vanilla coffee creamer, 1.5 cups of milk, ¼ cup Amaretto, frozen strawberries. I take out around 15 or 20 strawberries (depending on size) and allow them to partially defrost (still frozen in the center) this is necessary so it does not freeze up and not blend correctly with just a few berries. Put the milk, creamer and amaretto in the blending jar, add the partially defrosted berries, cover and blend, add milk if too thick to blend correctly. Once the concoction is blending smoothly add a couple hard frozen berries at a time to thicken as much as you would like. I use the reusable zip lock 1 cup plastic containers and fill about ¾ of the way to store in the freezer. Yummy

Vita-Mix 5200 Review

Vita-Mix 5200

I have had my Vitamix 5200 for about 2 months now. I literally use it several times a day and I could not imagine life without it now. My family has recently begun a journey to eating "raw" foods and the vitamix is a priceless tool in this endeavor. My family starts everyday with a fruit smoothie for breakfast (blended strawberries, blueberries, pinapple and spinach with pure water and ice). The vitamix breaks down everything, mixes it well and blends the most delicious tasting breakfast you ever wanted. Talk about instant energy! Lunch is often a green smoothie, blended in the Vitamix. I have used the dry container to crack wheat berries for bread (not 100% raw yet) and also made homemade nut butters using almonds, walnuts, and pecans. I also make a homemade applesauce using three cored apple (different types produce different tastes so experiment to find your favorite, strawberries, blueberries or even pears). The apples do not even need to be peeled or cored. I do core mine because I don't like seeds, but I leave all the greens from the strawberries on and simply blend then into the sauce.

The vitamix is definitely expensive, and I know that times are tough now, but I think that you can't put a price on your family's health. Since my family has started eating this way, we have lost weight, my daughter's skin is clearing up and we have so much more energy to accomplish great things during our day. You cannot put a price on that! I highly recommend this machine to anyone that wants the best for their family.
Oh and yes prior to buying the Vitamix, I burned up two blenders. Vitamix has a seven year warranty on their product, they are serious about their products. I love mine and you will too!

I was hoping to get an appliance that would allow me to make smoothies, sauces, gravies, and soups. Thus far, it's done all those things very well, leaving no chunky matter in the final mix. The only potential trouble is that the blade is relatively shallow, which forces you to have quite a bit of liquid in order for it to blend properly. While it won't make a paste, it does a very good job of making creamy drinks, and dips.

I have this Blender at work, however we do not use it for food, it is used to breakdown raw materials for testing. I use it 4 to 8 times a day, 2 to 4 days a week. The blender has been in use for 4 years with no issues, although I did manage to bend the lid. It cleans up very nicely. I would not reccomend this blender for home use - it's over kill, but I have bought it for two other locations in the company.

Green Power High Grade Juicer Special Review

Green Power High Grade Juicer Special
Average Reviews:

2 years after my original review the juicer is still working well. You will need a little more muscle to juice carrots if carrots are hard but the work is worth the juice you receive.
You get what you pay for is very real with juicers. I have been juicing for more than 10 years and have graduated from centrifical force juicers to masticating to the Green Power. It is everything it says it is. My family juices daily. This juicer is definitely quieter than all other juicers we have used. The juice has less pulp than other juicers we have used as well a better tasting juice (even with mediocre carrots). Cleaning the juicer is the easiest of all juicers we have had. (That's worth the extra bucks). If you're a serious juicer go to the top of the line. You won't be disappointed.

The Green Power Juicer's 190 Watt & 1/4 hp motor produces low noise, high quality juicing. This New Green Power Juicer is the latest in compact design and patented technological developments. The older models of the Green Power Juicer, like the Green Life, Green Star and Green Power Gold juicers are much larger, heavier and do not have the newest improvements. Get the newest model of the Green Power family right here and see why the new high performance design is so much better. The Green Power Juicer is also sold under other brand names, such as the Hippocrates, Kempo and the Samson Ultra Juicers. The only difference is our great low price! The Green Power Juicer easily juices fruit, vegetables, and wheatgrass. It also extracts juice from pine needles, therapeutic herbs, fibrous plants, pulpy fruits, and leafy vegetables. It can also make mochi, baby food, and desserts, including sorbet. Using the multi-purpose kit, a variety of pastas can be made. Multi-purpose functions also include grinding coffee, grains, seeds and nuts. Green Power's twin gear triturating action combined with a low speed (160 RPMs), and infrared and magnetic technology produce great tasting, nutritious juice. The magnetic process extracts positive ions and gives longevity to minerals in the juice, making it taste fresher. Magnets in the base of the juice bowl also delay oxidation, keeping the juice fresh up to 72 hours. The Green Power Juicer is very easy to clean and assemble. The polycarbonate inner shell means fewer parts to clean than other twin gear juicers. The internal stainless steel locking system strengthens the unit, making it quick and easy to assemble. With an overall weight of just 13.7 pounds, the Green Power Juicer is an excellent option for people who have arthritis, or have trouble with heavy lifting. With the Green Power Juicer you spend less time preparing and cleaning your juice extractor and more time enjoying the benefits of a superior tasting, health promoting juice!

Vita-Mix 1320 Professional Series, Platinum Review

Vita-Mix 1320 Professional Series, Platinum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I have two Vita-Mix blenders. We bought one at a fair 6 years ago, and picked up a new-in-the-box commercial model at an auction about 3 years ago. We have used both heavily. Vita-Mix blenders are tall (too tall to fit under typical kitchen cabinets), heavy, loud, and very, very effective. Like most, we've burned through any number of typical home blenders. The Vita-Mix blenders last.
Customer service is superb. We've had exactly one problem - the variable speed dial got really difficult to turn. With about two weeks go to on the original 5-year warranty (warranties have changed since - they're longer now), Vita-Mix fixed the base, including paying shipping both ways, and also told us to send along the container so they could make sure it was in good shape - and then replaced the blade for us.
Vita-Mix blenders come with a tamper, and a lid designed to take the tamper. Most of the time you don't need it. It comes in handy for very thick, very cold blends, like thick smoothies, ice cream, etc. You will absolutely, positively need to have a tamper - or stop and use a scraper - with ANY blender, no matter how powerful, the shape of the container, or configuration of the blades. "Tamper" is actually something of a misnomer. While it is used to tamp at times, it actually changes the mixing dynamics by effectively taking up part of the volume at the center of the container, eliminating cavitation in mixes where that's helpful.
The Vita-Mix base units are heavy because they use heavy-duty motors. Don't be taken in by competing companies' horsepower claims with lighter-duty motors with half the weight. The competitors hit higher horsepower ratings by running their motors at higher speeds. All blender motors run fast, of course, and bumping up the horsepower by pulling more amps this way can be appropriate for some motor applications, but you can't consider one factor in a vacuum. The Vita-Mix motors are heavy, and heavy motors last longer by using heavier cores and windings, both of which make the motor stand up longer to heavy use and heat without breaking down. Vita-Mix containers also employ a heavy flywheel below the blades. That, in conjunction with the heavier-duty motor, is what gives you longevity, and the ability to chop heavy stuff for years. If you look at the motor-to-container connector, you will also see that the Vita-Mix uses a larger diameter connector - less stress, more life, and lower possibility of stripping.
I do wish they were quieter, but the competitors are in the same ballpark, claims to the contrary notwithstanding. The height can be dealt with by simply storing the container away from the base (which we leave on the countertop). My only real complaint is the cost of extra containers. I'd love one of the 32oz containers, but think $100-$120 (typical price at a fair)is too much.

Bamix SwissLine - Immersion Hand Blender Review

Bamix SwissLine - Immersion Hand Blender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is the Bamix Swissline Super Box package but the components are across the line-up of Bamix products.
Mixing Wand:
This feels like a professional tool in my hand. The top has heft but not so much weight that my arthritic hands struggle with it. It is ergonomically shaped which makes holding it easy with little or no fatigue. It is quieter than the Braun it replaced and does such a superior job it does not feel like they should be in the same category. The Braun was a lighter weight, all plastic tool, which came with a detachable hollow plastic wand and processing container, both of which I used at least once a day, and it also came with a whisk attachment that I found too awkward to use. With the Bamix wand attachments I can do so much more: I puree, whip, froth, mix and blend like a pro. And fast! What it does to simple ingredients is amazing (Whipped skim milk froth blended with strawberries is heavenly!) The materials are first rate: solid stainless steel and sturdy plastics, that feel like they are of the highest quality, with workmanship that has a reputation for lasting decades -- this is not like many products today which are made to last 3 or 5 years and then be disposed of. Even the electrical cord has a solid quality feel to it.
There are different models available and three different lengths. I got the Swissline which is equal in length to common consumer immersion blenders. The stainless steel motor is encased so well it is designed so that you can immerse the unit well past the wand to the end of the tapered handle. It is easy to see why the Bamix is well regarded by professional chefs and serious cooks. Wet/Dry Grinder:
This works as well as a burr grinder with dry spices. My Braun had an processor attachment that would just smash the ingredients so I was left with a combination of big chunks and fine powder and everything in between. The Bamix gives me even results. Just don't expect it to work with raw garlic, that will not give you good results (I tried, the processor attachment is more suitable for that, better yet is the Kuhn Rikon Solid Stainless Steel garlic press which is nothing short amazing in terms of build and results). The Wet/Dry Grinder is really a dry grinder.
Slicey:
The wand works superbly, but it is the Slicey that makes me really happy. I have arthritic hands and am always trying to find a good tool to slice my veggies. Everything I have ever used, from top of the line food processors, large and small, and mandolins, to a shooter-style apparatus, always left me with odd sized chunks and slices with weird shapes, along with almost whole pieces that appear to simply have slid through sideways. Consistently, the outcome was unappealing -- fine for the family but not acceptable for serving guests. The main reason I bought the Bamix was for the Slicey, my plastic blade holder in the Braun processor had cracked which introduces bacteria, etc). Every Bamix Slicey picture or video that showed sliced onions, etc., showed textbook perfect slices. All my previous slicing efforts left me skeptical but I really was willing to try everything until I found something that worked well. So, I have to admit to feeling a bit of outright glee at seeing my first batch of sliced onions -- they were all evenly beautiful! The Bamix Slicey rocks, plain and simple. This tool is precisely engineered and so accurately fabricated that each slice was perfect. I thought I would have to put the onion quarters in a certain way for good results but that nothing but dropping them int he tube and pushing the plunger was necessary. It was fast and the results were brilliant. The chute is a bit narrow but I can work with that. UPDATED to add: One very important and disappointing thing to note is that it cannot be submerged and I am always nervous washing it.
Attachments & Accessories:
The Super Box includes the Swissline Wand with 4 attachments and a Slicey with 5 attachments (note that while only 2 are shown in the listing photo and 3 are mentioned in the listing write-up there are actually 5 included: a large S blade, both thick and thin slicers, and both coarse and fine shredders.) It also comes with the Wet/Dry grinder and 400ml small and 900ml large smokey-coloured BPA-free jugs. The wand attachments are all blunt edged and hand safe. The Slicey attachments are all sharp and need to be handled with care. The jugs have a rounded base with curved flange for a handle, a pouring spout and lid.
The different models come with different stands and the Super Box package includes what looks like a simple countertop stand but which is actually an elegantly designed storage unit. The arched front holds the Bamix wand in an easy to grab and replace position while the back has a spot that holds the cord, an area for the wet/dry grinder and even a little flip open storage bin for the attachments. The only extra I added to what the packaged offered was a 600ml medium-sized jug. When priced separately there was only a $5 savings going with the Super Box. I got it because I wanted a silver wand and the only other choice was a white Swissline.
Maintenance:
The top of the Slicey can not be immersed in water. The base has a silicone ring which helps it sit solidly while being used, and it is dishwasher safe as are all the other pieces. The Wet/Dry Grinder is best held in the hand and shaken during use. To wash the grinder just add a drop of soap and warm water then run for few seconds -- the base comes apart for cleaning if necessary. I add a squirt of vinegar to remove any smells that may linger and rub a bit of vegetable oil on the plastics if I do carrots or something else that may stain. The wand simply requires a rinse under running water or, if necessary, a spin in soapy water. The product booklet talks about how to care for the product so you will have years of use; what to do when the attachments get loose (gentle squeeze with pliers) and how to keep the Bamix motor mechanism running smooth (a couple drops of veggie oil up the shaft which they say to do regularly but I get lazy and will likely only do it sporadically.)
Purchasing a Bamix:
This part was perplexing and disappointing for a product such as this.
The Bamix is ONLY sold through one exclusive company in the US and one in Canada -- any other sellers with Bamix stuff are just clearing out old stock. If you want a Bamix you are forced to deal with only that one seller. I am in Canada and the Canadian seller's website was surprisingly light on information (especially for the exclusive seller) and it locked me out of viewing any pages after I'd completed the online purchase. I had never heard of the company and was genuinely concerned I'd been scammed. A call to customer service first thing Monday reassured me that it was legit. The girl I spoke to told me that the website was archaic and did not work, that the Super Box was available even though the Website showed it was not and then she got my package out right away so I had it within days.
Country of origin: Bamix are made in Switzerland.
--------
Bottomline:
The Bamix is a first rate product with a bizarre and limited selling system. I am reassured by the build quality and reputation for longevity and feel it is unlikely I will ever have to do anything through the seller.

Margaritaville DM3000 Tahiti Frozen Concoction Maker Review

Margaritaville DM3000 Tahiti Frozen Concoction Maker
Average Reviews:

Ok, so like almost everyone who is reading this review...my first thought was "Why am I going to pay THAT kind of money for a hyped up blender!" I can sum it up in two words...snowball fight!
Seriously though, I took the plunge and am not upset that I did. This makes a great addition to any party, whether it's a couple of friends, or a crowd. And nobody's walking around chewing on ice chips from their blender drinks! My kids love the shaved ice to play with, and it makes great snowcones/slushies.
Setup is easy, cleanup is easy (seriously), the only problem that I have found so far is creating the right recipes for the drinks. It comes with some standards...but I like to play!
Originally, my wife wanted to get a professional maker, but we found they were thousands of dollars. After buying the DM3000, we could care less about the profession model anymore...this one makes 3 different drinks in a cycle, is fun to watch, and easier to maintain! It is quick and effortless, especially if you pre-mix your drink ingredients and have them on standby.
In my opinion, if you have the extra money to spare, and you like to have friends over or have kids, this is a great product!

Breville 800BLXL Die-Cast Hemisphere 2-Speed Blender with 67-Ounce Polycarbonate Jar Review

Breville 800BLXL Die-Cast Hemisphere 2-Speed Blender with 67-Ounce Polycarbonate Jar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading the previous reviews, I was a bit leery of buying this blender. I wanted the best, period. First, this is in my opinion the best looking and I leave it on my counter top, replacing a Kitchen Aid which I gave to my sister.
The first thing I did was to fill the jug with ice to the top. I pushed the ice button and within a few minutes, I had finely grated snow with no large chunks at all. It would have been a perfect snow cone. I went on to put in Strawberries, soft tofu, Yogurt, Soy vanilla ice cream, honey and a little non fat milk on top of the shaved ice. It made one of the best smoothies I have ever had. I have had numerous complements from my wife and neighbors on the smoothies this produces.
I also put in a whole large sweet onion quartered and three cups of large skinned tomatoes, some mushrooms, corn and whole garlic cloves, along with some essential seasoning and made a perfect tomato soup. The consistency was creamy and consistently smooth throughout. No chunks of any of the ingredients, including the corn kernels or garlic cloves. It was wonderful.
I have not had this very long. About two weeks now, but it has gotten a lot of use in that time. I can not speak to the long term reliability of the product, but I have had other Breville products and they are consistently top drawer. The one thing I do think that Breville might have misjudged is that the jar is polycarbonate, a fancy word for plastic. It does seem to be a very sturdy jar and perhaps, there is a certain logic to it. When I transport a full jug of soup from the blender to a bowl or what ever, the weight is quite manageable. Not really an issue for me, but I could see it for others, especially elderly or those with physical limitations. The fit of the blade to the base and jar is clean and the design seems to be very well thought out. There is a plastic wrench supplied in the event the blade base is stuck on the jar, but I have not needed it yet for cleaning and there have been no leaks even after storing liquids in the jar for a period with just hand tightening.
It is only a two speed but in doing some research it seems that most multi button blenders have a low speed and 12 high speeds which are the same. This is done for the button loving public who think more is better. The 1000 watts is not really a dependable measure of the power of the motor since it really only tells you the power consumption of the motor and not the output. It seems to have more than enough power for the toughest jobs however and is heavy enough not to move if I do walk away from it to get an ingredient to place in the top opening while it is running.
Breville seems to have come up with a nice design of the blades and bottom of the container since it moves the material from the top to the bottom and vice versa for even cutting quite well on it's own and the hole in the top makes it easy to insert new ingredients with the motor running. I will say that this blender does everything I ask of it and better than my high end Kitchen Aid Blender which left small chunks of things like ice and garlic or corn kernels, etc.
If I have a problem with the motor breaking down as the others had, ( which based on my other Breville appliances, I doubt will be a problem), I will come back and comment on it, but for now, this is the nicest blender I have ever owned and I highly recommend it. In my opinion well worth the extra money.

I have had my platinum Vita-Mix 1363 CIA (Culinary Institute of America) model blender for just over a month. So far, I am loving it! I have definitely increased my consumption of fruits and vegetables since getting it. I start most mornings off with a smoothie now. I throw in whatever fruit is in season (I love berries, but I've used peaches, nectarines, plums, grapes, apples, bananas and various frozen fruits), a scoop or two of protein powder, milk or water, a couple handfuls of fresh spinach, a couple handfuls of ice and sweetener if needed. Surprisingly, the spinach doesn't noticeably change the flavor, but it does boost the nutritional content of the smoothie. In less than 10 minutes I can have my smoothie made, poured into a "to go" cup and have the machine all clean (just add warm water and a couple drops of dish soap- turn it on for 30 seconds, then empty and rinse the container). The smoothies always turn out 100% smooth- berry seeds, apple seeds, ice and other hard bits are totally pulverized and drinkable. I've made great low-cal salad dressings using fresh herbs, garlic, low fat cottage cheese, a splash of milk and salt (if you prefer, you could use Ranch dressing mix with cottage cheese and milk). I made a very satisfying tomato soup with home grown tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic, onion and salt. I've made great blended piña coladas, too! I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with different recipes. Because the Vita-Mix processes foods quickly, I'm actually finding that I'm making healthier eating choices. It's faster for me to put together a salad with pre-washed greens, veggies and homemade dressing than it is to go to the nearest fast food restaurant... and in the end, it's more satisfying and a LOT healthier. Yes, this is an expensive machine, but I think it will pay for itself within the first two years by reducing my spending on going out to eat.
This is a heavy-duty machine. It is loud when it's in use, but generally you won't need to run the machine for more than a couple minutes at a time. This is definitely a professional quality machine and will yield professional quality results. A regular home blender cannot compare!
The Vita-Mix 1363 CIA model and the Vita-Mix 5200 model are essentially the same machine. The CIA model has some different color choices and comes with a HUGE recipe book called "Create", a smaller "recipes and techniques" booklet and an hour long cooking class DVD. The 5200 model includes a different booklet and DVD. Both have the same 7-year warranty. If the color of the machine and the recipe book don't matter to you, save yourself some $$$ and go for the 5200 model instead.

We have gone through 4 blenders in the last 18 months. We are consumers of high quality products and usually do our research. Each and everyday we make "fruit shakes" for our family of 5. Our mix consists of frozen fruit, sometimes some fresh fruit, yogurt, and oj. Our other blenders burned out, even the Blendtec couldn't handle the job (it automatically shut down on us, plus it couldn't really handle 64 oz. of our mix!). But this guy (okay, it's very masculine looking), can do the job quick and make enough in the mega-sized 64 oz. plus pitcher for all 5 of us (we usually have to make 2 pitchers). Frozen drinks are just about all we use a blender for so for our purposes, this is the only one for us! It's loud, it's scary, it moves about a bit, but it does the job so fast that it doesn't matter that much. It's not that attractive to my eyes, but my DH thinks otherwise. I usually like to store my appliances in cabinets, but this one is too big and heavy to move in and out each day...so on the counter it stays (it's sure to be a conversation piece). I have to say that it makes my life A LOT easier and that is why I rate it a 5.

This is an awesome blender. It blends stuff like you've never seen before and I am really pleased with it. But holy cow is it LOUD!! The cat hates me. I got a pair of earmuffs from the shooting supply place to wear while using it. Maybe overkill, but I think that using it twice a day without them would result in hearing damage eventually. I wish they sold an enclosure for this one like they do for the commercial ones....I'd definitely buy one.
I bought this because I had a juicer and liked it. But I felt that tossing all that pulp and fiber had to be making me miss out on a lot of health benefits. And just trying to spoon some of it back into the juice doesn't work, it's gross. This blender blends whole fruits and vegetables wonderfully, I can still get the fiber and in a drinkable form.
After I bought this, I read a webpage where they talked about blending an avocado WITH the pit, and I tried it. It works, I ended up with an amazingly smooth mousse-like creamy pudding. Not something I'd do every day, but it was very interesting. I have been making kale banana blueberry smoothies for breakfast and it blends everything into one homogenous shake. No bits of leaves, chunks of stuff, etc. I'm enjoying it. I just wish it wasn't so loud.

However, please be aware that unit cannot handle heavy loads that thicken quickly. Be sure there is plenty of liquid if used on high speed. Unit twice in two weeks shut down on me, once for 8 hours because the ingredients thickened quickly (potato-leek soup). I had to finish recipe in my food processor. Because of this sensitivity, if I had to do it over again, I would put my investment elsewhere.

Never thought we would spend this kind of money for a mixer/blender! But we did and love it!! Use it everyday for smoothies, salad dressings, frozen desserts etc etc. It is a workhorse and works as advertised. Saves a lot of time. We grate parmesan cheese and its perfect every time. Margaritas, fresh peanut butter..I could go on and on or maybe I have. Haha. Anyway, if in your budget, buy it.

Necessity or Luxury: Depends on if you have experienced it (& if you plan on using it regularly)
As a guy who takes his smoothies and soups very seriously, it is a necessity for me. While some might argue about the price (Covers the purchase of an average blender every year into perpetuity if purchase price is invested in an annuity), I find comparisons to other blenders moot as the results from the Vitamix is not reproducible by an average blender (no strawberry/blackberry seeds in your smoothie, no bell pepper seeds in your soup). And, cleaning takes seconds!
The Motor of the Vitamix 5200 is the same as the CIA Commercial blender and costs a little less. The CIA edition comes with an exhaustive recipe book and a CD. Did I mention the blend sound reminds me of a revving Ferrari? (All the more reason to go RED!)

Waring RB75 Pro Professional RPM Blender Review

Waring RB75 Pro Professional RPM Blender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Waring blenders -- and KitchenAid mixers -- used to last a lifetime. But, in the same way that KitchenAid is not what it was before being sold to Whirlpool, Waring is not what it was since being sold to ConAir (yes, ConAir, the hairdryer people).
The RB75 is a great-looking blender. Very retro. Very Flash Gordon. And the motor seems to be as good as Waring's ever were. Unfortunately, the blade assembly design is bizarre, to say the least, and what is not metal soon disintegrates (six weeks for me, a couple of weeks for a previous reviewer). When this happens, the blade no longer turns even though the spindle whirs merrily along.
I gave this blender one star to warn off those who haven't bought it. Those who have bought it and have had it for less than 30 days ought to get a refund ASAP. They're living on borrowed time. But for those, like me, who've had it for more than 30 days and can't get a refund, there may be a way to "fix" the problem without spending megabucks on shipping (which would only provide you with the same albeit a new blade assembly) and/or a new jar (which, again, would only postpone the inevitable).
To "fix" the problem (I won't know for a while how long this fix will last), wrap the business end of pliers with tape to protect the cap nut that holds the blade down. Remove this nut. Pull off the blade (this may take some jimmying; be patient; it's sharp). There may or may not be shreds of whatever used to be there to keep the blade moving. Remove all of that.
Now turn the jar on its side and look thru the glass at the blade assembly. If you turn the bolt from below, you'll note that the threaded portion of the bolt is flat on two sides, making an ovoid shape. The hole in the center of the blade corresponds to this shape. This is what make the blade turn. However, you will also notice that there is a smooth, round, 2mm space on the shank between the threaded portion of the bolt and the part that disappears into the various gaskets and so forth which hold all of this to the bottom of the blender jar. If there is nothing in this 2mm space to hold the blade in place against the threaded, ovoid portion, the blade drops down to this smooth, round portion and just sits there. You can tighten the cap nut, and you may get some stirring action, but this won't even puree a banana.
I don't know what occupied that 2mm space before and don't particularly care since it disintegrated. But I'm not ready to toss a blender that cost me over a hundred bucks, either. So, I went to the hardware store (in my city, Ace sells washers, o-rings, nuts and so forth loose) and got an o-ring -- metric -- that was 2.5mm thick with an inside diameter (ID) of 5mm and an outside diameter (OD) of 8mm. I also bought two stainless flat washers with the same ID and OD.
Now, the threaded portion of the bolt has a diameter of 5mm. But it then flares out slightly to 7mm. The easy way to stretch your 5mm ID o-ring over this 7mm shaft is to slip the o-ring over the threaded portion of the shaft, replace the blade, replace the cap nut, and screw down the cap nut. As you tighten this, the o-ring will be forced down and stretched over the wider portion of the bolt. This will help prevent leaking.
Now remove the cap nut again and jimmy off the blade. Slip your two stainless washers over the threaded portion of the bolt so that they occupy that 2mm round space. Replace the blade and the cap nut. Tighten everything up.
Of course, this takes much longer to explain that it takes to do. Once you have the o-ring and washers, you ought to be able to accomplish all of this in ten minutes or less.
On the other hand, if you don't care about the money and don't want to mess with any of this, you have no choice but to buy a "vintage" Waring made before the company was sold, unless you want to be taking it back again and again. Your best bet will likely be a Waring from the 40s or 50s. These can be found on eBay just about any time, and generally go for around 40 or 50 dollars. This will also be your only recourse if you want a "real" KitchenAid mixer. Hobart does now sell a countertop model for the home, but it's considerably more expensive than the current Whirlpool/KitchenAid mixers, which are in turn more expensive than the real KitchenAids available on eBay.
The moral to this is that if you have something that you bought a long time ago, like an old KitchenAid mixer or an old Black&Decker power tool (before B&D started manufacturing junk), and it still works, don't get rid of it.
Update, Nov 9:
I've used this blender for over four months now after "fixing" it (see my review of June 29) and I couldn't be happier. Not only does it perform like a Waring is supposed to perform, but I've had no further problems after my 59 cent fix.
I'm raising my rating to 3 stars from one (that is, I would if I could) because the blender now works the way it's supposed to, but I'm not rating it "5" because the buyer shouldn't have to fool with a homemade fix at all. But if you know your way around a pair of pliers, this is an excellent blender.
About that burning smell that a couple of reviewers complained about. I can't be sure, but I suspect that the smell comes from using too low a speed for whatever is being done. If the motor has to labor, it may give off that odor. Just kick it up a notch and see if the odor goes away.
