Sojoe 32SM Star and Moon Steel Fire Pit Review

I bought this fire pit 3 years ago and burn on an average of 2 to 3 times a week even through the winter months. Being that hard on a fire pit I figured it would be worth it to invest in a good one so I shelled out the money and it was great until recently. It is literally falling apart. I can no longer use it and feel safe. The legs are disintegrating and so is the bottom. I was truly hoping to not see wear until about 5 years for that price. I only burn seasoned wood in it and have been known to keep a fire going for a couple of days. It was setting on a base of pea gravel and properly covered with the cover provided when raining or sub zero temps hit. With all the rah rah about the Sojoe I just figured it would last a bit longer.

Well, I could not find one review on this product no matter where I looked so here is my opinion. I took a risk and bought this as it seemed to fit the bill for me. It is similar to a Santa Maria style grill (meaning the grill can be raised or lowered over the fire) has many options such as swing outs and a rotisserie. Well, I cooked 20 burgers tonight in no time flat and have my beef brisket cooking slowly over the fire tonight. The grill quality was pretty good and for the price it is money well spent. I mean from a barbecue stand point some air vents at the bottom would be nice but from a fire pit standpoint it would be unneccessary. Long story short, I would buy this again as it is very convenient and easy to use. I would recommend natural lump charcoal and it does not take much to produce a great low flame fire.
Enjoy!

I purchased a Bond fire pit, similar to this item. Immediately after bringing it home, the paint started to peel and fall off. This is happening on the entire surface of this fire pit.
I sent a complaint to the company, saying I have young children, and the fact that this product is imported from China, I was concerned about possible lead in the paint. I received a call after a couple of days, this person said the paint was edible, I shouldn't worry about the kids eating it. I know you think I am joking, I almost fell over.
He then offered me $20 to go to the store, get some Rustoleum and scrape and paint the item myself. I thought he was kidding me, till he hung up on me. I would never buy another product from this company. It's bad enough they take no responsibility for what they sell, but to add unneeded sarcasm is just too much. I will gladly send you photos of the unit with the paint falling off.

I have three boys in a townhouse with patio. We wanted a fire pit but obviously needed it to be neat, safe and well-constructed. This fit the bill beautifully. Campfires to warm your toes, cooking hotdogs and s'mores, and my scout gets practice as well. I bought the cover to keep it protected when not in use - very much recommend this. It went together easily and is very strong and sturdy.

The Patina products firepit is one of the best outdoor investments you will make.
Not only is the quality topnotch, but the firepit is very multi-functional.
The round bbq grill allows you to enjoy cooking over the fire for incredile tasting fire-roasted food.
My family and I love sitting by the fire and cooking burgers, chicken, veggies, seafood, and of course roasting marshmallows. You will feel like you are camping or on vacation everytime.
The spark screen is a nice safety feature to prevent sparks or floating debris from escaping while you are near or away from the firepit. The firepit also comes with a very strong and handy poker to move logs around and to stir the coals, and has a nice hook at the end to quickly swap the bbq grill and spark cover around.
The only thing I wish the firepit came with was a waterproof cover to keep rain water/snow out of it, since the firepit does not have drain holes.
The cut-out images on the side of the firepit are spectacular at night as the images glow from the background blaze of the flames. Make sure you pick out a nice design as you will love to look at them all night long. The cut-outs also allow ample air flow which aids in creating sensational fires. There are also strong welded screens behind the cut-outs so nothing will fall through. Very well made and should last forever. Enjoy the magic of an outside family fire on a beautiful night.

Patina Products F108, 30 Inch Moose & Trees Fire Pit Review

Patina Products F108, 30 Inch Moose and Trees Fire Pit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The exact firepit I purchased isn't available anymore, but I'm sure this is exactly the same one but with moose cutouts instead of bird cutouts. The firepit is great. Some other firepits I've seen look strangely dinky once you get them in the yard, but this is a nice size. As an unexpected surprise, I love the ring around the outside. It really is handy (so to speak) to be able to use it as a handle, and I admit that I prop my feet up on it all the time (along with marshmallow sticks). The screen and the grill are both nicely formed, and they seem to fit well. The rustic patina really does add a nice look, and the firepit goes great with our cedar adirondack chairs. The only negative is that the rust powder comes off all over your hands and clothes as you put it together. Maybe it's somehow artificially rusted? There's an incredible amount of rusty powder. Once you wipe it down, it becomes much more manageable though, so I didn't deduct any stars for it. Be prepared to get dirty when you're assembling it though.

Patina Products F100, 30 Inch Evening Sky Fire Pit F100 Review

Patina Products F100, 30 Inch Evening Sky Fire Pit F100
Average Reviews:

I did a lot of research before buying this and decided to spend more money on a quality product. We had wanted to use the fire pit as a grill (it comes with a grill insert), but this will not work unless if you build a BIG fire (forget charcoal). Also, I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong, but the metal on the grill insert came off on the food. Either way, we will only be enjoying this as a decorative item and not as a grill.
The design is very pretty, but I would not call it portable- it's very heavy and I wouldn't want to be carting it around. I could lift it myself (it's ~50 pounds), but not without getting the patina/rusty finish all over myself.
Be advised that while it does come with a mesh dome to protect you from flying sparks, it does not come with a cover to protect the fire pit from the elements. This would be a wise investment!
I like that this product comes with the stand welded into the bottom. I wasn't sure that it would, because on other sites they were charging an additional $70+ for the legs.
I have to be honest, I don't think I would purchase this product again. There's nothing outwardly wrong with it- I just don't feel like the quality is so much better than the ones that were $100 or $150 cheaper (and still looked very similar). I'd like to exchange it for something cheaper, but return shipping costs prohibit that from being a cost-effective transaction.

This could be a really great piece, but the construction quality is incredibly shoddy. The welds are messy, the tile looks cheaply put together. Also, the tile panels don't line up, the pan in the middle is out of round, and it generally looks cheap for a $300 piece of hardware. The one good part, as usual, is Amazon. Quick shipping and great customer service.

Enviro-Log Inc 6Pk 5Lb Enviro Firelog 100562 Firelogs Holders & Accessories Review

Enviro-Log Inc 6Pk 5Lb Enviro Firelog 100562 Firelogs Holders and Accessories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These two fire logs Enviro-Log and Java Log, have a lot in common. Both are made from waste materials: coffee grounds in one case; waxed cardboard, like milk cartons, in the other. Both advertise more heat per unit weight and lower emissions than regular wood. Java-Log asserts carbon neutrality, because its waxy binder comes from plant sources - I don't know the provenance of the wax in Enviro-Log. Both advertise a 3hr burn time for the 5lb log.
They're alike in how they burn, too, whether that's a good thing or not. I had a chance to test both. I burned them, one at a time, in an outdoor firepit - a steep-sided ceramic bowl about 80cm across and 30 deep. Both times, I burned the log during daylight on a metal grate with plenty of air circulation underneath, and lit them according to the manufacturers' directions. For the Java-Log, that meant leaving the paper wrapper on and lighting the wrapper in three places. I found this somewhat less than satisfactory, since only one end of the log lit. Following the manufacturer's directions, I didn't poke at it until the whole length of it was lit, which took about a half hour. Even then, the surface didn't burn evenly until, against recommendation, I turned it over, grooved side down. That seemed to burn a bit better. I never got very big flames, but I'm sure it would have been more impressive at night. Burning had a slight waxy smell. That's a big point for me, compared to the aroma of woodsmoke, because my wife's asthma worked a lot better with the Java-Log's emissions than with regular smoke. (I missed the woodsy aroma, but you can't have everything.) It burned pretty much the advertised time, but went through phases of more and less smoke as it burned. It burned cleanly and completely, unlike wood which always leaves charred ends, leaving only a cup or two of uniform, sandy ash. I assume the ash comes only from the coffee grounds, so it should be compost-compatible.
The Enviro-Log was remarkably similar, in my test. Directions say to unwrap the log, wad the wrapping under the log, and use the wrapping as kindling. As with the Java-Log, this was less than satisfactory. It lit, but rolled off the wad once burning weakened it, so I had to move the log back onto the burning wrapper. As with the Java-Log, the manufacturer's procedure lit only one end of the log. It also took about a half hour and a little turning for it to catch completely. It burned much the way the Java-log did, but with a slightly more pronounced waxy smell and with a little papery ash flying away (but caught by the firepit's screen). The Enviro-Log had smoky phases as did the Java-Log, but a bit smokier. It also burned down cleanly, but the pile of papery ash at the end was a good bit bigger than the Java-Log's residue. Since it's just paper ash it should be as garden-friendly as wood ash, but I wouldn't swear to either log's ash suiting an organic farmer.
I found the two pretty much equivalent in this test. The waxy smell meant I wouldn't use either for cooking, and they don't produce coals the way wood fires do. Only one thing (which I didn't test) left me leaning toward the Enviro-Log. The Java-Log's instructions are quite insistent about burning only one at a time, not burning other wood or fuel with it, and leaving it alone while it burns. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the waxy binder could soften if the log overheated, possibly causing it to crumble or flare up. Likewise, the "leave it alone" order could be due to softening with heat, so that poking at it would break it up rather than turning it. The Enviro-Log advertises that you can burn one with other fuel (e.g., regular wood) in the fire, burn two together, or add additional fuel before the first log burns out. That flexibility is a real selling point, especially if you plan to keep the fire going past one log's lifetime.
In summary: they're both attractive because of my wife's sensitivity to wood smoke, and both use materials that would otherwise have gone to landfill. When burned one at a time, they behave quite comparably - not a big showy fire, more than enough to cast a bit of warmth. The Enviro-Log seems more versatile, though, and doesn't prohibit many of the things I normally do with regular wooden logs.

We bought the copper fire pit with the intention of having wonderful family and neighborhood marshmallow roasts. After spending an hour putting the pit together, we read the fine print. We discovered that you could't eat the food you cooked over the pit for fear of food poisoning. It would've been helpful if it specified that on the outside of the box. It's a beautiful, very decorative pit. If your intention is for BBQ's, you're going to be very hungry.

Weber 2726 Wood Burning Fireplace Review

Weber 2726 Wood Burning Fireplace
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had shopped around for a patio fireplace for a couple of years. I didn't like any of the ones sold in the chain stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Target, Sears, etc.). They were poorly built and looked like they would rust out quickly. The more quality built ones were too expensive for what essentially is just a fire ring. I stumbled across the Weber Wood Burning Fireplace and after a little research purchased it. Like all things Weber, it isn't the most flashy or even the best but it is well designed, sturdy, and should last for years. We have used ours once and I will share a number of observations and comments on previous reviews.
First, the small aluminum bowl underneath the fire bowl is not an ash catcher. It is a heat shield. This fireplace should not be used on a wood or composite deck. We have a brick patio and it is safely used there.
Second, where we live (Central, OH) there is no need for a screen around the fireplace. Perhaps in more fire prone areas it would be a good idea, but then again, should you have an open fire in those areas? For my uses a screen is not useful or needed and would just make adding fuel more difficult.
Third, to the commenter who said the fireplace is too smokey, it's the green wood you burned that produced the smoke, not the fireplace. I used well seasoned wood as anyone should and it produced about as much smoke as one would expect.
Fourth, you do not need to use the lid but there is one major advantage to doing so when the weather is cool: the lid helps direct heat down rather than allowing it all to rise quickly. In other words, it keeps more heat down at chair level when you're sitting around the fireplace.
Fifth, the lid does indeed smother the fire quickly. The lid is just tight enough to smother the fire. That's a huge plus since it means you don't have to wait until the fire dies out on its own to go inside. Nor do you have to douse the fire with water to put it out. In the case of this product, I'd recommend you don't do that anyway unless you want to ruin the porcelain finish.
Sixth, it took about 30 minutes to assemble. Even though the handles are wooden, you will still need heavy gloves to move the lid out of the way and move the riser. I have the 2010 model and the handles are sturdy and solid.

Mr. Heater MH42T 42,000-BTU Propane Tank-Top Radiant Heater Review

Mr. Heater MH42T 42,000-BTU Propane Tank-Top Radiant Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The triple burner Mr. Heater works wonderfully! Now this is what you call a radiant heater! Prior to purchasing Mr. Heater I was using a Bernzomatic patio heater (that cost significantly more) that didn't heat very well - I had to practically hug the Bernzomatic to feel heat. The triple burner Mr. Heater keeps me toasty warm! I love the red glow it gives off too! I installed Mr. Heater on a 40 lb. propane tank - this is just the right height to keep me warm while on my deck swing.
Mr. Heater isn't a particularly stylish unit - however, it sure does heat well!
I have a few minor criticisms; overall I'm very happy -
During my first week using Mr. Heater the burners kept shutting off - they would not stay lit for very long. I adjusted the thermocouples to position them closer to the burner and I haven't had a problem since.
Mr. Heater doesn't work very well in wind - it works fine in a breeze or a little bit of wind. I tried to use it on my deck in a storm with fairly gusty winds - not a good idea. The wind tended to cause the burner to ignite the chamber that carries the gas to the burner. If this happens - you'll know it.
It'd be really nice to have an electric ignition! The two burner model has this; however I really wanted a maximum amount of heat - I wanted the three burners.
It'd be really nice if the propane tank mounting hardware was adjustable for height. If I mounted Mr. Heater on a 20 lb. propane tank it'd simply be too short to set next my patio table or swing. If you could adjust the height a couple of feet that'd be nice - you can probably jerry rig something.
Overall, it heats great - an excellent value too, in relation to the cost of patio heaters (which is what I use this for).
******* 2//2010 Update *******
While it's been a great product the last couple years, another issue has become evident. Mr. Heater is not rust resistant! It's rusted to the point that I can't use it anymore. I kept it in an enclosed screened in porch so it was never exposed directly to rain. However, rain that was blown in and the summer humidity has had a big impact. I've replaced Mr. Heater with another manufacture's version that doesn't rust.

The Mr. Heater MH42T 8,000-42,000 Btu triple heater is a step up from the two-burner model, giving you the flexibility of using one, two, or three burners. The unit mounts directly to 20- to 100-pound cylinders. It uses infra-red heat, which means that it warms the objects in front of it, not the surrounding air. This gives you more heat per Btu, which means that using all three burners at the highest of the three settings will keep you warm even in miserably cold situations. Each element shuts off automatically with loss of flame. Do not use in unventilated areas. One-year limited warranty.--Josh Dettweiler

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model? If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.
