(More customer reviews)We have had this toilet for about a year. It took a bit of trial and error to "get it right" as far as how much Coconut Fiber to put in and how much water to mix with it. On the Nature's Head website, it says to fill the tank to 2" BELOW the agitator. We have pretty much boiled it down to 1.5 bricks of Coconut Fiber and about 5 C water (You may have to add a little bit of water at a time to get the consistency just right). There are only two of us using this toilet. The longest we have ever been able to go between "dumps" is maximum 3 weeks, but usually only two weeks. They say you can go up to 6 weeks between dumps, but we have never been able to achieve this. Of course, it depends on how often it is used. We are both home all day, so we are not using someone else's toile during the day, like at work or elsewhere.
My husband does the dumping. It CAN be an unpleasant job and also can be a little heavy for a woman to do by herself. My husband just simply dumps it into a 33 gal garbage bag and then puts that garbage bag inside another 33 gal garbage bag. He then puts the bag(s) outside in a 5 gal pail, (with lid and holes in the lid for ventilation), for a couple of weeks to allow it to "compost" to some degree. We live in a place where there are individual garbage bins and also a large garbage bin in which the individual garbage bins are dumped weekly. After about 2 weeks, we take the double 33 gal bag and simply dump it in the large trash bin.
What I especially like about this toilet is, if we want to dry camp, we do not have to worry about a place to "dump." That is a MAJOR PLUS, especially since we are "full timers"! We feel that this alone is well worth the "trouble" of having to dump every couple of weeks. After a while, you will want to take the toilet outside and clean it out with the hose. You won't want to just keep dumping and refilling without occasionally cleaning out the tank really well in order to keep it clean. Also, due to the type of material the toilet is made out of, (quite porous), urine stains, which will eventually accumulate around the trap, can be very difficult to remove, . My husband had much difficulty in removing these stains, but eventually, after much scrubbing, he was able to remove most of them.
This is the ONLY compost toilet I found that would actually fit into our motor home. And even then, we had to cut down the platform which the toilet sits on; otherwise, it would have prevented one of the drawers in the bathroom from opening. As it is, that drawer only now opens partially, but it was worth the trade-off of having the toilet. Also, I am 5'6" and my feet still do not touch the floor while sitting down. Of course the fit will will depend on the floor plan of your RV or boat.
I would definitely recommend this toilet if you are looking for a smaller compost toilet that will fit in an RV because most of them are WAY TOO LARGE to fit in the smaller bathrooms of older RV's. My RV is a 1989.
All in all, I am very glad we bought this toilet and I would not want to go back to the flush type. Obviously, you also save water by not having a flush toilet. That could come in very handy should water become in short supply in the future - Don't laugh - now days anything and everything is possible.
I hope this helps anyone who is considering buying one of these toilets. Oh, one more thing ...... Larry, the gentleman who owns Nature's Head is very nice, helpful, and easy to get along with.
