I purchased one of these tables in late summer 2009 to use as a center island for our new kitchen. We have a number of stainless steel appliances and counters in the kitchen, and thought this would match the rest of the decor quite nicely. The table arrived after 1 - 2 weeks in a large box, approximately 8 x 24 x 48; assembly was very straightforward and simply required bolting the four legs to the drawer and stainless surface unit.
The quality of the woodwork and drawers is excellent but it was immediately apparent that the steel surface had a small manufacturing defect in one corner where an extra lump of metal, approximately 0.25 x 0.5 in, protruded above the surface. In addition, within several weeks of use it became clear that the surface of the table was extremely fragile, accumulating large scratches and marks in response to normal use, e.g. setting plates, silverware, or cans of food on the table. Compared to other stainless steel surfaces in our home or to other stainless steel countertops, the John Boos table clearly was inferior and visually unappealing.
The John Boos website includes advice about caring and maintaining for stainless steel surfaces in which consumers are cautioned against using abrasive cleansers or chlorine bleach (which we did not do), but fails to mention anything about increased susceptibility to scratches compared to other surfaces. However, when I contacted the Boos customer service department, I was informed that, "This is a 16 gauge stainless with a 304 polish. The metal is going to show scratches. I recommend that you get some Bar Keepers Friend which is a stainless cleaner and a scotch bright pad."
Had I been aware of the inferior quality of the stainless steel surface beforehand, I obviously would not have purchased the table. Although John Boos provides a "one year guarantee against defect in workmanship and material", they have refused to honor this warranty, which may contribute to the fact that their company currently holds a B- rating from the Better Business Bureau of Southern Illinois.
This is only time I've complained about honesty in advertising in an Amazon review. I suspect that many of the butcher block products from John Boos are outstanding, but I can't recommend the stainless steel products to anyone, and I am disappointed by the failure of the company to stand behind their product.
