I'm not advocating sealing our borders, but when I need something for the house, I do go out of my way to find products made in the US. So last year, when my Henckels knife handles began to crack (despite meticulous care!), I searched the internet and came up with LamsonSharp, made in Massachusetts.
Not sure of the quality, I bought a few knives as a test bed. I liked the idea of the rosewood handles, so I got those. I can't comment on the other handle styles.
I've been very satisfied, so much so that I bought this set. These knives are heavy, well balanced, and in my opinion, beautiful. There is some slight variation from knife to knife, but I expect this in a hand made product. I've now used them for over a year and encountered zero problems. They've held a good edge with little maintenance, and they have no stains or discoloration on the blades like you get with some cheaper "stainless" knives. Having used both forged and stamped versions, I'd say stick to the forged. They are of much higher quality for just a little extra money.
As a bonus, Lamson will sharpen the knives at no cost (you pay shipping) for as long as you own them. I've not had to use this service, but it's a nice touch.
So, if you're not a knife snob who wants a damascus steel santoku forged in the fires of Mount Fuji, and you're tired of Kmart quality stamped blades made in Chinakistantinople, give these a try.
